The Tennessee Vols put a bow on a less-than-stellar end to the 2025 season with a strong start to 2026, signing 28 new players in their 2026 recruiting class. That was good for the seventh best class in the country, per Rivals.com.

The headliners of the class are a pair of five stars in QB Faizon Brandon and WR Tristen Keys. Both should become integral parts of the program in the years ahead, and they’re the two names that fans recognize the most among the signees.

However, there’s someone else in the class that ESPN sees as making a more immediate impact. ESPN put out a list of the signee for each team that is most likely to have an impact in 2026, and for Tennessee, that player is four-star DE Jordan Carter out of Douglasville, Georgia.

ESPN names DE Jordan Carter as most likely immediate impact 2026 signee for Tennessee

This is what ESPN had to say about Carter:

“Carter spent more than a year in Texas A&M’s 2026 class before the 6-foot-4, 245-pound edge rusher reopened his recruitment in November. After picking the Vols over Auburn and Georgia Tech, he’ll join Tennessee with a chance to make an instant impact in 2026.

Carter will arrive to Knoxville in the wake of an 83-tackle, 18-sack senior season at Georgia’s Douglas County High School. On the edge, where his explosiveness and physicality make a challenging proposition for opposing blockers, is where Carter’s immediate future probably lies. But he also possesses the type of frame and overall technical quality that could allow Carter to develop into a fit on the interior if given time to bulk up at Tennessee.

Carter will be a much-needed asset for the Vols in 2026 as Tennessee prepares to lose four of its six most utilized defensive lineman from a defense that finished 93rd in points allowed this fall. Carter’s arrival amid that mass turnover also coincides with the hiring of defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who has received production from talented young pass rushers such as Collin Oliver (Oklahoma State) and Jack Sawyer (Ohio State) before.” – Craig Haubert, Eli Lederman and Tom Luginbill, ESPN.com

I think it’s a fair argument, as Tennessee needs all the help it can get along the defensive line. It’s a stark contrast to how things were just a calendar year ago, with the Vols’ meat grinder of a defensive front carrying the team to the College Football Playoff. Now, after a 2025 season that saw Tennessee’s defensive front gashed early and often and resulted in defensive coordinator Tim Banks getting fired, the Vols need answers, both short and long term, on defensive line, and Carter could offer a solution quickly, if he can hit the ground running this offseason.

Of course, we don’t know how the quarterback situation is going to unfold this offseason. Tennessee will likely go out and try to get a veteran in the portal, but there should be another quarterback competition between any such portal addition and Brandon, George MacIntyre, and Jake Merklinger, provided neither of the latter two transfer. If Brandon wins that job in fall camp, and there’s of course a chance he could, then he would certainly win the argument there as the most impactful.

In any event, Tennessee will hope to get significant contributions from a number of their new faces, and most Vol fans won’t care where the production comes from.
