Alabama DC Kane Wommack makes himself look a bit silly while trying to throw shade at the Sooners before playoff matchup
Wommack and Alabama think they can get in Oklahoma’s head.
There’s been no shortage of banter back and forth between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Alabama Crimson Tide just days before their College Football playoff matchup. It feels like most of it, if not all of it, is coming from Alabama. Whether it’s dating back to six weeks ago when the two teams played, or this week, it’s all for show.
In the first matchup, members of the Alabama staff said they believed Oklahoma HC Brett Venables was legally sign-stealing, of course. That’s been a trend of this season, for opponents to call that out as if it’s not their fault that they’re not changing their signs. Alabama DC Kane Wommack made sure to let everyone know he is changing his signs.
“If they’re listening, I’m not going to call any one play the same,” Wommack said earlier this week.
Well, Mr. Wommack, I’d sure hope you would change things up. If not, that would be a bit of coaching malpractice.
Sooners’ offense needs to be ready for whatever Wommack throws at it
Wommack was responding to a question about Oklahoma’s quarterback run game. In the last game, John Mateer ran a 20-yard touchdown in with defenders all over him, dragging them in while spinning across the goal line. Mateer only had 23 rushing yards on 10 attempts, but that one run was a huge difference-maker for the Sooners.
The Sooners haven’t quite found a way to get any of their offense going since that game. The QB run game hasn’t been great, and the RB run game hasn’t been, either. Getting everyone healthy these last few weeks should completely change that.
For example, before the hand injury, Mateer ran very differently from the way he does now. And now Mateer has the hand tape off, so maybe he will be more willing to run through people instead of losing yards trying to run around them when that’s not his game.
Wommack is a pretty good defensive coordinator, and Alabama has one of the better defenses in the conference. Mixing that with Oklahoma’s bad offense is not exactly a good recipe for OU. However, they should be prepared for anything. Only time will tell, but this game should be a fun one to watch.
