Giants rookie QB Jaxson Dart responds to a controversial narrative that has New York fans worried about how opponents are defending him
Should New York Giants fans be worried about how rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart is playing?
The most controversial narrative surrounding Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart this season has been his unwillingness to avoid contact. This week, that controversy heated up once again.
Yesterday, when the latest episode of the in-season edition of Hard Knocks was released, fans reacted to a quote from Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn. He told his team they needed to be physical with Dart because of his play style.
“When he’s out here, he is a running back first,” Quinn said on Hard Knocks, “He is not looking to go down and get into the slide. We gotta go out and hit him, fellas.”
Today, when speaking with the media, Dart was asked about the quote from Quinn. He completely disregarded Quinn’s comment because of his history of other coaches saying the same thing when he was in college at Ole Miss.
“Kirby Smart said the exact same thing every time that he played against me, so did Nick Saban, so did every coach that I played in college,” Dart told reporters, “So, this is nothing new, just try to go out there and play smart, and be available for your team.”

While Dart’s rookie season has been filled with exciting plays that pave a promising future, much of the discussion around him is centered on whether he’s being too reckless. He’s already missed games due to a concussion he suffered against the Chicago Bears. And he keeps getting evaluated for concussions during games, which happened recently against the Commanders.
Quinn’s comments contextualize why Dart needs to be more careful and slide more. Coaches are going to see him as a target if he doesn’t slide more consistently. To Dart’s credit, he was more careful against the Commanders, but he still needs to improve his awareness of when to avoid contact. Availability is critical for young quarterbacks.
Despite the controversy over this subject, Dart managed to put a positive spin on it. He sees it as a sign of respect.
“It just gets me excited. Just as a competitor, you want to go out there and compete,” Dart shared, “And obviously, they’re acknowledging respect in a way, too. So, I appreciate that. You want to go out there and play really good for your team. And I think any time that there’s teams that are game planning and they definitely give respect to a player, I think it’s for a reason.”
Interim head coach Mike Kafka was also asked about the issue, and he stated he’s ignoring the narratives that have been bubbling up recently.
“I don’t necessarily listen to the narratives out there,” Kafka told the media, “Me and Jaxson talk each day. We talk about what’s important for his job, what’s important for the offense, how he’s going to lead it, how he’s going to operate throughout the week, how I can help him be an asset for game day … Don’t get too bogged down with all the other stuff, it’s alright, let’s focus on what we can control today in the workday.”
It’s not surprising to hear Dart respond aggressively to this issue, given his personality as a player. However, hopefully he doesn’t completely downplay the problem, because his health will be the most essential piece of the Giants’ future success.
