There’s zero question Mike Evans will have to put the Bucs on his back and carry them to the playoffs

Mike Evans was visibly upset as he stormed off the field before Zane Gonzales’ last-second kick iced the Atlanta Falcons’ upset win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15.

He was fired up the entire game and looked like his typical self as he hauled in 50/50 balls over defenders and finished the night with 122 yards on six receptions, but he’s a competitor and he knows stats are least-important when it comes to all the numbers that tell the story of a football game.

It wasn’t enough for Evans – he wanted to win. For him, everything else comes second and the rest of the locker room needs to feed off that energy heading into a trio of make-or-break games.

Mike Evans will have to be the one that reignites the Bucs’ season

Everyone on the Bucs loves Baker Mayfield and is willing to go to war with/for him, but Evans is the heartbeat of this team. There’s a different vibe when he’s around and the Bucs just play with stronger levels of intensity and focus when he’s on the field.

It can’t be quantified and that’s even proof of the value Evans brings. The intangible stuff is what makes the greats who they are – it separates them from the rest of the pack and it’s noticeable when it’s missed.

Evans’ absence helps in a way that he’s kind of like a new voice on the field in the vacuum that is the 2025 season. Think about it: He missed Weeks 3-6 and didn’t even finish the game against the Lions before missing Weeks 8-14. He’s only been around for three whole games the entire year.

So, having him back is almost like an addition that’s always been there, but now he can help in the moments that matter, which are in-between the sidelines.

That, along with just who he is as a person and player, is what can reignite the Bucs’ season and get them back on the track they were on during the first two months of the year.

“We’ve been here before, so we know what it takes to try to win,” Evans told reporters Wednesday. “You know, don’t change anything. Don’t do anything special – just do what we’ve been doing and try to win these ball games.”
