Jets add a developmental QB even before their looming 2026 NFL Draft decision
New York is getting a look at another QB option sooner rather than later.
The New York Jets are adding to their collection of signal-callers. Months ahead of a potential first-round rookie quarterback joining the squad, a team with a chance of earning the first overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft is making a move to get a better look at an inexperienced NFL QB.
Jets sign former Lions QB Hendon Hooker to practice squad
According to Jordan Schultz, the Jets are signing former Detroit Lions QB Hendon Hooker to their practice squad following a workout. The QB already had a relationship with some of the coaches on staff in New York, so it makes plenty of sense that he would choose this as his landing spot. Keep in mind that both Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor continue to deal with injury.
Aaron Glenn already announced that Brady Cook will get the nod as the team’s starter against the New Orleans Saints in Week 16. That being said, the Jets could give Hooker a shot in one of the final two games just to get a look at a different option.
I talked with fellow draft analyst Rob Gregson about Hooker’s outlook from when he was selected and also now that he is joining New York’s group of quarterbacks. This feels like a potential “final chance” for the former Tennessee Volunteers star and fan favorite to make an NFL impact.
“Hendon Hooker is still young in his NFL career, but this opportunity serves as a potential last resort to show that he is an NFL-caliber QB. Hooker was a bit of a polarizing prospect when he came out of Tennessee. Some saw a quick delivery and someone who could execute when called upon, but for me, a lot was lacking.
Some of it has to do with the offense he played in for the Vols, which doesn’t prepare quarterbacks for the next level, given the lack of progression and scheme that takes advantage of the hash marks on college fields. Beyond that, his accuracy and ball location left a lot to be desired.
The good news, however, is that he’s had time to correct those issues, which are fixable with time on task. Perhaps we see if that’s the case with the Jets.” — Rob Gregson, A to Z Sports
