Chiefs may finally get more use out of one of their most dynamic players who fans have been asking for
Chiefs rookie running back Brashard Smith is very dynamic.
Now that the Kansas City Chiefs are eliminated from playoff contention for the 2025-26 season, there are opportunities to be had for players who have something to prove. That means rookies, guys on expiring contracts who are wanted back, and young players in general who haven’t had many reps should be getting more reps.
So, fans will finally get to see more Brashard Smith, the rookie running back who obviously has a lot of juice.
“He’s going to get more [special teams reps] just out of the fact that Tyquan [Thornton] is out,” special teams coordinator Dave Toub said on Thursday. “He’s going to get more; we are going to try to get him more touches.”
Smith is a very dynamic player with the ball in his hands. He’s got great juice, can cut on a dime, catch the ball out of the backfield, and is pretty good at everything he is asked to do. The only thing he’s not great at is running between the tackles, but the reps haven’t been there.
On Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, Smith will get more special teams snaps, too.
Chiefs rookie running back Brashard Smith set to play return team against Titans
Special teams have been very poor this season, across pretty much every aspect. Harrison Butker hasn’t been good. The punting unit with Matt Araiza has had its share of great moments. But the return units haven’t been consistent enough. That’s where Smith comes in.
“He’s another young player that we are trying to develop, and he’s come a long way, and he’s done a really good job handling the football, and it’s not too big for him,” Toub continued. “He’s another young player that we are excited about.”
Tyquan Thornton is injured, so Smith will get his shot, it seems. Smith is a guy that fans have called for on the field much more than he already has. Smith has played 143 offensive snaps this season and only 32 special teams snaps. Those are the lowest running back snaps on the team, other than Elijah Mitchell’s seven.
So, it is clear he needs to be on the field more, because the eye test would tell you he’s a good football player.
