The Tennessee Vols’ 2025 season got off to a tough start when starting cornerback Rickey Gibson suffered a season-ending injury in a Week 1 win against Syracuse.

Gibson, who started 12 games for the Vols in 2024, was expected to be one of Tennessee’s top defensive players in 2025.

Instead, the Alabama native spent the season rehabbing. As a result, true freshman cornerback Ty Redmond was thrust into a starting role (Redmond experienced some growing pains in 2025 but was named a freshman All-American).

Rickey Gibson is expected to be a full go for the Vols in spring practice

VolQuest’s Austin Price noted on Tuesday during a guest spot on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will that Gibson will be good to go when Tennessee takes the field for spring practice in March.

“He’ll be ready to go when spring practice gets here in March,” said Price. “He’s champing at the bit. He’s been doing all of his rehab. It’ll be a nice little one two punch with him and Ty Redmond. And then we’ll see who they can add in the secondary to go along with those guys.”

With cornerback Colton Hood off to the NFL, Redmond and Gibson are slated to serve as Tennessee’s starting cornerbacks next fall.

It won’t be a surprise, though, if the Vols look to add a transfer cornerback to serve as depth or competition.
