LSU Tigers’ chances at landing Auburn transfer QB Deuce Knight might come down to an overlooked issue

The LSU Tigers aren’t the player for transfer QB Deuce Knight that some believe.

While it wasn’t the most surprising move of all time, Auburn suffered a big loss when freshman quarterback Deuce Knight opted to enter the transfer portal this week. With how little the 6-4, 217-pound signal caller played this year, there had already been talk of him portaling even before head coach Hugh Freeze was fired a few weeks ago.

An extremely talented dual threat quarterback with four years of eligibility remaining, there are going to be a lot of potential suitors for his services.

A couple of the early candidates are Boston College and Ole Miss. While Boston College feels like a bit of a random program to mention, Knight’s relationship with new general manager Kenyatta Watson could prove very beneficial in the end. The Mississippi native is even planning his first visit to Chestnut Hill this weekend after the portal official opens up on January 2.

Ole Miss is less surprising considering Knight’s background. While he never committed to the Rebels, and instead chose the Tigers and Notre Dame before that, his home state school was always mentioned throughout Knight’s recruitment. Some coaching changes could finally push the Rebels over the top with this second chance.

LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin are another team that is going to have some hype, but as of today, I don’t see that being the best fit in the end. Despite Kiffin having the leg up coaching in Knight’s home state during his recruiting process, it never made Ole Miss attractive enough to the talented signal caller.

Even after he decommitted from Notre Dame, Kiffin Ole Miss still wasn’t enough. You heard constant rumors of Knight flipping to the Rebels down the stretch, but still nothing. Perhaps the relationship between Knight and Kiffin isn’t nearly as strong as some people like to pretend that it is.

Deuce Knight’s career background

While Knight started just one football game during his Auburn career, it was electric. It was just FCS Mercer, but Knight played brilliantly. He completed 15 of 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns. Knight also rushed for 162 yards and four scores on only nine carries as a runner.

Knight finished the 2025 recruiting class as a five-star player according to the 247 Sports Composite ranking. That rating had him pegged as the No. 28 overall player, the No. 5 quarterback, and the No. 1 player from the state of Mississippi for the 2025 recruiting class.

That final ranking came off a senior year where Knight threw for 2,067 yards and 25 touchdowns, along with another 450 yards and 12 scores on the ground, despite missing several games due to injury.

There was a long list of impressive suitors who pursued Knight heavily. Some of those top programs included the Fighting Irish, the Tigers, Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Oregon, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas A&M, TCU, Indiana, Louisville, South Carolina, Colorado, Vanderbilt, Washington, and Virginia Tech, among others.
