Michigan Wolverines interim head coach Biff Poggi makes strong statement on future of the program and Kyle Whittingham
When asked about Michigan being a “rebuild” for Kyle Whittingham, Biff Poggi shut that down immediately
The Michigan Wolverines football program didn’t exactly have their season finish how they hoped.
Their head coach was fired amidst a massive scandal. Their head coaching search didn’t go as smoothly as planned. Then they lost the final game of the season on New Year’s Eve to the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl. However, interim coach Biff Poggi made one thing clear about the future of the Michigan program when asked about the future and new head coach Kyle Whittingham
Michigan Wolverines far from a “rebuild” for new head coach Kyle Whittingham
Any time there’s major transition at a college football program there is understandably some time that it takes to turn things around. Most of the time, the best programs in the country have less of a problem bouncing back thanks to the addition of far more transfers and continuity in place. However, that didn’t stop media members from asking about the Michigan program being a possible “rebuild” for new head coach Kyle Whittingham following the loss to Texas. Poggi’s strong statement was all that fans needed to hear to feel much more confident in their team:
“No, this is a program that won nine games this year and played a lot of really good teams in the Big Ten. We played two SEC teams that are pretty good. Oklahoma and Texas. I thought the kids competed so hard today. They played so hard. This isn’t a rebuild at all. I think that would be short-changing the kids and where they are. I think coach Kyle Whittingham is going to do a fantastic job here. He’s going to have a lot of really good players back. He’s obviously going to bring players in. And again, he’s a guy that’s won 180 games. He’s been a head coach 20 years, and won three conference championships. I think he’s going to find a very full cupboard [of players]. A bunch of willing kids that are just great.”
Biff Poggi wasn’t kidding. The Michigan Wolverines were one of the youngest power conference teams in the nation this season, leaning hard on a true freshman five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. It’s no surprise to realize that Michigan is going to be bringing back a “full cupboard” of talent according to Poggi.
True freshman wide receiver Andrew Marsh proved that he’s the offensive playmaker this team needs to build around. Second year running back Jordan Marshall proved he was more than ready to take on a feature back running role moving forward. Several first and second year defenders stepped up against Texas and throughout this season.
New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham is not going to have anything close to a “rebuild” on his hands as the Wolverines look poised to have a breakout push toward the College Football Playoff under new management and further developed elite talents in most every position group.
