The LSU Tigers have already lost quite a few players to the NFL Draft and transfer portal, so Lane Kiffin and his staff decided to make sure they retained their top offensive talent rather than risk losing him.

Trey’Dez Green, the team’s leader in receiving touchdowns this past season and a de facto WR1 for the Tigers in multiple games, was clearly a top priority for LSU. According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, and other sources who confirmed, LSU was able to work a new deal for their star tight end and keep him home.

Trey’Dez Green too important to risk losing to the transfer portal

Most LSU fans likely already understand this, but Green was always going to be priority number one on the Tigers for opposing teams to target. Green is a 6-7, 245-pound monster of a man with underrated long-striding speed, great length, phenomenal ball skills, and will clearly be an important piece of Lane Kiffin’s new LSU Tigers offense. To get a more plugged in perspective on Green I reached out to our A to Z Sports writer Adam Holt who has covered both LSU and the New Orleans Saints. Here’s what he had to say on Green:

“Trey’Dez Green is a player who had significant buzz around him potentially finding a new start away from Baton Rouge in December, so this re-signing is an important development for Lane Kiffin. The incoming freshman class boasts JC Anderson, a massive tight end target, and he could create a fun duo with Green’s stature for the receiving game. The wide receiver corps will be rebuilt under Kiffin, so keeping Green in the fold will also provide some stability and continuity for the unit as a whole. The red zone is where Green’s value proves to be the most important where he often takes the attention of multiple defenders, and it wouldn’t surprise me if the new head coach of the Tigers makes him a cornerstone target when it means the most for whoever is playing quarterback in 2026.”

Trey’Dez Green will almost assuredly become a cornerstone target in Lane Kiffin’s offense regardless of the wide receivers that LSU adds this offseason. Kiffin has been integrating tight end production into his offense, scheming up more tight-end-centric plays over the past few seasons, but he’s never had a talent like Green. Finding a 6-7, 240+ pound athlete who runs routes out of the slot like a natural wide receiver is nearly impossible, but that’s what Green brings.

When he first got to Baton Rouge he was more of a jump ball specialist. However, over the last two seasons Green has clearly improved every facet of his game, demonstrating that especially since the South Carolina game this year. Since that contest in October, Green has grabbed over 30 receptions for 400+ yards and six scores, averaging more than 50 yards per game. There was no way LSU could afford to lose an offensive talent like that to the transfer portal. Fans should expect some major fireworks for him in Kiffin’s offense all 2026 college football season long.
