The Michigan Wolverines just wrapped up a decent 9-4 season. However, thanks to the Sherrone Moore scandal, losses to the NFL Draft, and significant transfers out of the program, new head coach Kyle Whittingham has some work to do with getting the roster right in Ann Arbor.

Yet another offensive playmaker entered the transfer portal to end this week, but Bryce Underwood and the Michigan Wolverines’ offense might be better without him. Wide receiver Semaj Morgan was often a major liability rather than an asset for Michigan this season, so many fans will likely be glad to see him gone.

Semaj Morgan’s mistakes cost Michigan all season long

Some might think it’s harsh to suggest that Michigan will be better off without a three-year program veteran, but it’s simply an inarguable truth. Morgan struggled in every facet of his game.

He logged two total fumbles in the run and return games. He racked up eight drops on just 36 targets this year, dropping over 25% of balls deemed “catchable.” And not only that, he screwed up in run-blocking assignments consistently, whether due to his size or complete ineptitude at understanding where to be, like when he stepped right in front of Justice Haynes on what could have been a massive touchdown against Michigan State.

The media covering the team just got sick of covering Morgan’s many failures. It was something new every single week. Devin Gardner, former Michigan star quarterback, went as far as to call it coaching malpractice to even have him on the field last fall. Morgan’s offensive role was finally reduced late in the season, and his 2026 opportunities were almost certainly going to decrease.

Thanks to the emergence of true freshman phenom wide receiver Andrew Marsh, Donaven McCulley, and a deep tight end room, Underwood didn’t need to target Morgan much. He definitely won’t need to target Morgan next season either, with the Wolverines bringing in a trio of freshman wide receivers who will likely immediately be upgrades over him (plus transfers). Losing a veteran wide receiver might hurt in most cases. Not this one.
