Todd Bowles brags on unheralded Buccaneers player that played a lowkey but also huge role in beating Panthers

Sure, football games are ultimately decided on the field, but the preparation during the week leading up to the contest is just as important when it comes to factoring into everything.
Hell, one could easily argue it’s an even bigger factor than what happens between the sidelines, but I digress.
Even with the help of a torrential downpour, it was clear the Buccaneers prepared the right way ahead of their matchup with the Carolina Panthers. The Bucs defense shut down the Panthers’ rushing attack, which is the backbone of their offense, and it was the first step toward keeping the offense in check. The front seven played a very strong game and certainly benefitted from the return of Calijah Kancey, who made an immediate impact.
But the Bucs were also able to corral quarterback Bryce Young, which was huge considering he threw for almost 200 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions during the Panthers’ Week 16 win over Tampa Bay.
And they were able to do so thanks to one of the least-known members on the team.
Todd Bowles brags on Garrett Greene for imitating Bryce Young during practice
Young has developed into a decent quarterback and even though he’s on the smaller side of the spectrum, he’s most dangerous when on the move. He’s great at creating plays out of structure and can really make defenses pay.
Therefore, the Buccaneers had practice squad wideout Garrett Greene play the role of Young in practice last week and it really helped the defense get accustomed to what the third-year signal-caller is able to do when he’s mobile.
“[Garrett] Greene, our receiver — our practice squad receiver — did a heck of a job playing Bryce Young as quarterback and ran those guys around so we’d try to hustle to the ball and everybody to the ball,” Bowles told reporters after the game.
For those who don’t remember, Greene is a former college quarterback that converted to wide receiver this past offseason. He made the transition almost seamlessly and produced a couple of big plays during training camp and the preseason that persuaded the Buccaneers to keep him on the practice squad.
Like Young, Greene is a mobile guy who can make plays with his legs. He’s even close to Young’s 5-foot-10, 205-pound stature at 5-foot-11, 210 pounds.
It was a smart move on the Bucs’ part and now, they await the results of Sunday’s tilt between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons in order to see if they’ll keep playing football in January or if they’ll stay at home on the couch.
