One of the Tennessee Vols’ top transfer portal targets is Penn State Nittany Lions transfer EDGE Chaz Coleman.

Coleman is a former four-star recruit who signed with Penn State during the 2025 recruiting cycle. He played under new Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles as a freshman in 2025.

Tennessee was instantly viewed as one of the top contenders for Coleman when the transfer portal opened last week, but a weekend visit to LSU had Vols fans worried that the talented EDGE may not make it to Knoxville this week for a visit.

Fortunately for Tennessee, Coleman left the LSU visit without committing to the Tigers.

According to On3’s Steve Wiltfong, Coleman arrived at Tennessee on Sunday night for his visit with the Volunteers. Wiltfong noted that Coleman’s visit is expected to last until Tuesday.

It sounds like Tennessee will be aggressive in its pursuit of Chaz Coleman

According to Wiltfong, Tennessee, along with LSU, is pushing the “hardest” for Coleman from an NIL perspective.

“On3 heard on the day the portal opened that LSU and Tennessee were pushing the hardest from a NIL perspective,” wrote Wiltfong.

Ohio State is also in the mix for Coleman, but LSU and Tennessee appear to be the top two teams in this battle.

Wiltfong’s NIL nugget about Tennessee and Coleman indicates that the Vols are willing to be aggressive in their pursuit of the talented EDGE. But it doesn’t guarantee that he’ll land with the Vols. Every program has budget limitations to some degree. It’ll be on Tennessee to determine how much they’re willing to spend on one EDGE defender.

I think Tennessee should be willing to go a little over budget for Coleman, even though he’s still a young player with only eight career tackles and one sack. That’s because Coleman has a ton of upside, he already has experience in Knowles’ defense, and he’s a player that Knowles clearly believes in.

I’d expect the Vols to try to get a deal done with Coleman before he leaves Knoxville on Tuesday.
