The Green Bay Packers were lucky to keep vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan around in 2025, but the outcome might not repeat itself this year. Early in the process, the Miami Dolphins have already requested an interview with the Packers executive for the general manager job.

The Dolphins and former GM Chris Grier mutually agreed to part ways in October, even though Miami is expected to keep head coach Mike McDaniel.

Jon-Eric Sullivan is one of the Packers’ top scouts

Sullivan has been in his current position since 2022. He is the second highest person on the Packers scouting department, right after general manager Brian Gutekunst. The Packers also have Russ Ball as the executive vice president/director of football operations, as he is the main responsible for managing the salary cap.

Sullivan started in the NFL with an internship with the Packers in 2003, and it changed his life. He had different scouting roles from 2004 to 2015, when his career really started to take off. In 2016, he was promoted to director of college scouting by former general manager Ted Thompson.

When Gutekunst took over in 2018 and Eliot Wolf left the team, Jon-Eric Sullivan became the second executive in the hierarchy of the scouting department, being promoted to co-director of player personnel — and his status was solidified in 2022, when he was named the vice president of player personnel.

Sullivan is a key part of the Packers’ front office. It seems like it’s a matter of when, not if he will eventually become an NFL general manager.

After him, the scouting department has director of player personnel John Wojciechowski, director of football operations Milt Hendrickson, director of college scouting Matt Malaspina, assistant director of college scouting Patrick Moore, director of pro personnel Richmond Williams, plus national scouts Sam Seale and Mike Owen.

Even though Jon-Eric Sullivan didn’t land a GM job last offseason, he had several interviews around the league and put himself in position to get a job next year. He had talks with the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Sullivan was a finalist for both the Titans and Jaguars jobs, a process that included an in-person interview in Jacksonville.
