Oklahoma Sooners bolster secondary by adding unique talent transfer from College Football Playoff team
Former Oregon Ducks cornerback Dakoda Fields has elected to join the Oklahoma Sooners out of the transfer portal
The Oklahoma Sooners have been red hot out the gates in the transfer portal, raking in six players out of the portal on Monday, adding playmakers from all across the country to bolster both sides of the ball.
Their latest is a unique swing for upside, a departure from what they’ve done so far in the portal. Oklahoma added former Oregon Ducks cornerback Dakoda Fields to their portal haul Monday evening.
Dakoda Fields a wise gamble for Sooners to make
Cornerback wasn’t necessarily a priority add for the Sooners in the offseason, as they were set to return Eli Bowen, Courtland Guillory, and Jacobe Johnson as their starters, but the departures of Maliek Hawkins, Devon Jordan, and Gentry Williams removed some of the depth in that room, and they needed to replace that.
Fields didn’t play much for the Ducks this season, appearing in just three games and playing a total of 41 snaps. However, he has the athletic profile the Sooners have begun coveting out of the secondary, and his frame at 6’2, 175-pounds is the size Oklahoma needs on the perimeter. Fields boasts a 74″ wingspan and plays with the physical edge you’d like to see out of a player with that size. For reference, Derek Stingley of the Houston Texans, came out of college with a 74″ wingspan.
His athletic profile out of high school is eye-popping. On top of his status as the 11th-ranked cornerback in the class of 2024 and the ninth-overall player from California, Fields posted some intriguing numbers as a track star. He posted personal records of 22.10 seconds in the 200-meter and hit a 22′ in the long jump, speaking to his explosiveness. Additionally, he also ran on the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, a huge deal in California.
Most of the Sooners’ adds out of the transfer portal have been proven players, but they opted to take a swing on developmental upside with Fields to bolster their secondary, and this is an encouraging find with his excellent combination of tools and traits.
