The Baltimore Ravens are in unfamiliar territory. The Ravens have had just three head coaches in franchise history — and now begin their search for a fourth. John Harbaugh is out in Baltimore and with it comes a critical hire for the Ravens, who are aspiring to secure another breakthrough hire that can help Baltimore fulfill its potential.

A major part of the calculus for the Ravens, as you would expect, is quarterback Lamar Jackson — who has several years left on his current contract but had conversations with the team about a new extension ahead of what was an injury-marred and disappointing 2025 campaign. Baltimore, according to a new report, has Jackson on the front of their mind as they undertake their first head coaching search in nearly 20 years.

Report indicates the Ravens are looking for a head coach who can “reach” Lamar Jackson

“It did seem like a lot of the focus here was to find someone to reach Lamar. To invigorate Lamar. To find him. That’s sort of what we’re talking about there — I’m not saying that they chose the quarterback over the coach, it’s not like that. It’s just ‘which coach can come in and get the absolute most out of the two-time MVP that just had a weird year?’. And a year where a lot of the people in the building were wondering ‘is Lamar okay?’, ‘what’s wrong with him?’, ‘how can we get to him?’. The goal for the new leader of the organization is to find someone who can get the absolute most out of their superstar quarterback.”

Lamar has plenty of reasons for his struggles, including dealing with injury for most of the year. But this hire is a critical one for not only the Ravens as a team, but for Jackson’s legacy as an NFL player. He’s entering into the back half of his career and lacks the deep playoff run that would otherwise change the discussion around his place among the all-time greats. This year felt like it could have been the year, given how wide open the AFC is. Instead, the Ravens find themselves at home. And, rightfully, Baltimore’s head coaching search his going to be deeply rooted in seeking the right buttons to get Jackson back on track. None of this team’s goals come to life if that doesn’t, first.

Lamar Jackson’s NFL career to date

  • Four-time Pro Bowler, three-time All-Pro, two-time NFL MVP
  • 76-31 record as a starter
  • 187 passing touchdowns, 56 interceptions
  • 6,522 rushing yards, 35 rushing touchdowns
