Oklahoma Sooners take an intriguing swing from ACC contender out of the transfer portal to build depth around John Mateer
The Oklahoma Sooners added another talented transfer to reinforce their offensive line depth around quarterback John Mateer.
The Oklahoma Sooners have once again struck in the transfer portal, giving them their 10th transfer to join the team over the last week.
This time, they added another offensive tackle option in former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Peyton Joseph, a former four-star recruit in the class of 2025.
What brings to the Oklahoma Sooners
It’s tough to say what Joseph is as a player, given that he played just four snaps on offense this season for the Yellow Jackets. However, he brings good size at 6’3, 310 pounds and has the play strength and power to be a mauler in the run game. While he played tackle for Georgia Tech, there’s speculation he might also be able to play on the inside. Regardless, either spot is a position of need for Oklahoma.
The Sooners needed to add a swing tackle with multiple years of eligibility. They have their top tackles in Michael Fasusi and Ryan Fodje and have added former Arkansas Razorback E’Marion Harris to add some competitive depth along the offensive line. However, they lost all of Jacob Sexton, Jake Taylor, Luke Baklenko, and Logan Howland at offensive tackle to the portal this season, leaving plenty of open vacancy in their tackle room. Even if he kicks inside, the Sooners need that kind of depth there as well at both center and guard. Pairing his blend of tools with Bill Bedenbaugh could be intriguing down the line.
Oklahoma doesn’t want a repeat of 2024, where they simply started running out of players on their offensive line and had to rely on hurt players to tough it out all season. By continuing to take steps to bolster their depth out of the portal, the Sooners hopefully won’t encounter a similar situation moving forward.
Head coach Brent Venables and general manager Jim Nagy are continuing to shore up depth and add worthwhile swings while the team builds around quarterback John Mateer in 2026 and likely Bowe Bentley for the following seasons. Taking on a tackle/guard project here with multiple years is a wise investment, and could pay dividends down the line for the Sooners. With this addition, I could see maybe one more add on the offensive line, but I would expect it to be a cheap upside swing if they do.
