Eagles front office needs to take away one part of Nick Sirianni’s job that just cost them another Super Bowl run
The offense was a train wreck, and the head coach is partly to blame.
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni had a right-hand man during their 2024-2025 Super Bowl run that capped off a magical season. It wasn’t Kellen Moore. It wasn’t Howie Roseman. It wasn’t Jalen Hurts. It was, however, Kevin Patullo.
Fast forward about eleven months into the future.
The Eagles offense just laid a complete egg in the Wild Card round and got upset by a wounded San Francisco 49ers team. Patullo was calling offensive plays for Philly, after Sirianni pushed for him to replace Kellen Moore when he left to take the head coaching position with the New Orleans Saints. A lesson must be learned, considering this wasn’t the first coaching staff gaff by Sirianni in his tenure.
Nick Sirianni shouldn’t be allowed to pick the next Eagles offensive coordinator
Sirianni has “made” two hires at OC so far as the Eagles head coach. Of course, he is not the sole contributor on the choice, but he led the charge in hiring both Brian Johnson and Kevin Patullo for the offensive coordinator role in two different years now. Both times, the decision blew up in his face.
Meanwhile, a front office choice at OC, like Kellen Moore, was a major success and landed him a HC position on a fast track sort of timeframe. That is worth noting. It’s also worth noting that Patullo’s group struggled with consistency this season, but the main, core group of talent was fairly unchanged from a season ago.
Lane Johnson missed some time in the latter half of this season, but as a whole, the skill position players were just as talented, and the bulk of the OL was a constant.
Even then, it simply did not produce nearly enough for the Eagles to make another Super Bowl run. The inefficiency of the unit caused concern for the long-term outlook of Barkley at running back, Jalen Hurts’ future and upside at quarterback, and the frustration around the pass catcher room.
In the Wild Card loss to the 49ers, the Eagles offense totaled just 119 yards and 6 points in the second half, following a productive first half that saw some explosive runs from Saquon Barkley. It was the perfect prognostication of the one-year sample that we’ve seen from Patullo’s unit. The regression was apparent all season long and became a nation-wide spectacle in the playoff defeat.
General manager Howie Roseman has never been shy about saying what he feels or making aggressive moves along a staff or roster. He and his fellow executives in Philadelphia have to pull in the reigns in on how much control they allow Sirianni to have this offseason.
If they do move on from Patullo, as they should and is expected around the NFL, Sirianni cannot get final say in who is calling plays for the offense next season. Keep in mind that the future of A.J. Brown with the team feels murky, and tight end Dallas Goedert is an impending free agent.
Changes are coming, and Philly must make sure that the front office holds the keys to what occurs both on the sidelines and on the depth chart.
