An unexpected transfer quarterback solution may be about to fall into the Tennessee Vols’ lap
The Tennessee Vols could land a transfer quarterback at the buzzer.
Could the Tennessee Vols find their quarterback solution at the buzzer? It’s possible, based on the latest piece of transfer quarterback news.
CBS Sports college football insider Chris Hummer reported on Friday that Duke has concerns that star quarterback Darian Mensah could enter the transfer portal before it closes.
The portal is set to close on Friday, but because it works the way it does — programs have 48 hours to enter an athlete’s name — we could see players show up in the portal as late as next Tuesday or Wednesday.
“If you submit it end of the business day today (Jan. 16), your 48 hour clock is not going to start until Tuesday morning,” said VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs Friday on 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will. “So there will be people that quote go in the portal, officially, as late as next Wednesday, even though the portal closes today.”
Mensah, who started his career at Tulane, passed for 3,973 yards, 34 touchdowns, and six interceptions this past season. He also rushed for one touchdown.
Tennessee would face stiff competition for Darian Mensah if he enters the transfer portal
Mensah isn’t a big threat with his legs, but he’s a dynamic quarterback who would bring plenty of experience to Tennessee’s offense.
It’s unknown if the Vols would have serious interest in Mensah if he enters the portal, but it’s hard to imagine that they wouldn’t at least check in.
The problem for Tennessee, though, is that Miami is also in the market for a transfer quarterback. And the Hurricanes have money to spend. Mensah would have all the leverage if he entered the portal, which could trigger a bidding war.
For now, Mensah isn’t in the portal. But I doubt this report emerges unless there’s a real possibility that he enters.
The Mensah update, by the way, comes a day after On3’s Chris Low said on WNML’s Josh and Swain that some “established” quarterbacks could enter the portal before it closes.
Update:
It could be a trick for a team to pay Mensah due to his contract with the Blue Devils.
