The Ole Miss Rebels have largely put together a successful transfer portal cycle over the past few weeks, but as the deadline to enter the portal has passed, Pete Golding and his staff face a tough situation.

There were rumors and conflicting reports that leaks about player compensation had caused trouble within the Ole Miss roster. Regardless of the depth of that impact and alleged situation, just days later, interior offensive lineman Devin Harper and linebacker TJ Dottery are now gone.

Star edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen tried to enter the transfer portal as well, but Ole Miss is apparently trying their best to hold him to the deal he just signed instead of letting him go.

Ole Miss contesting Princewill Umanmielen’s transfer portal entry

It hasn’t even been two weeks since Princewill Umanmielen announced he would be returning to the Ole Miss Rebels for 2026, with a signed extension. A to Z Sports hasn’t procured full details on Umanmielen’s contract, but Ole Miss obviously believes it should be binding. So much so that, as of Friday night, according to multiple sources (Chris Hummer of CBS had it first), Ole Miss is contesting his attempt to even enter the transfer portal.

This is a bold move for the Ole Miss program. Refusing to file the necessary paperwork for a player on the day of the deadline to enter the transfer portal is certainly playing with fire, legally speaking. There is a recent precedent of a similar situation, but it’s still unclear how this is going to progress.

On the other side of the country, the Washington Huskies essentially blocked quarterback Demond Williams from leaving. He had signed a deal with Washington and then almost immediately tried to jump into the portal (many believing he was headed to Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers). Williams is now back with his program and trying to play damage control. Will this situation end similarly?

It’s unclear, but per Pete Nakos of On3 and other sources close to the situation, Umanmielen and Ole Miss are discussing the best way forward. Does that mean he’s returning? Not necessarily, but Ole Miss fans should certainly hope so.

Umanmielen was the most productive pass rusher for the Rebels in 2025, and it wasn’t remotely close. He tallied 11 sacks and over 50 pass rush pressures on the season as the team’s premier edge defender. The next best defenders all had several fewer sacks and much lower pressure rates.

Ole Miss fans might just want to say, “Good riddance!” because he’s trying to leave them, but that would be unwise. Yes, Golding and his staff have added some depth along the defensive front via the transfer portal, but none of them come close to Umanmielen’s talent.

Hopefully, the relationship can be mended. If not, then Ole Miss might be in for a messy situation with the NCAA, or even legal action from Umanmielen. Either way, A to Z Sports will continue to monitor this situation closely.
