Week 1 of the college football season is only going to give us one top 25 matchup based on the AP preseason rankings, but every single year it feels like we get a huge upset somewhere on the opening weekend slate.

The question is which game gives us the best shot at chaos this time around looking ahead to Week 1? Let’s break down some of the top candidates worth watching.

Clemson at LSU is tempting, but don’t overlook Lane Kiffin’s team looking to send an early message

The first matchup you might gravitate toward is the highest-profile one. College GameDay is heading to Death Valley for Clemson at LSU, and you could convince yourself pretty easily that the Tigers from the ACC have a real shot in this one.

LSU is full of transfers, it may not look pretty to start, and Clemson has a roster with some veteran pieces that could band together and deliver a strong performance. But I see too many variables going against Clemson to think they pull off this upset. Death Valley at night, a loaded LSU roster even if it needs time to gel, and the kind of atmosphere that swallows opposing teams whole. It’s a fun thought exercise, but I’m not buying it.

Wisconsin and Notre Dame is a long shot, even at a neutral site

Another matchup worth discussing is Wisconsin and Notre Dame in a neutral-site setting. Crazy things could happen, and crazier things have happened. Notre Dame has all the expectations and pressure on them, and then you look at Wisconsin, where Luke Fickell is coaching under a hot-seat label. This could be his make-or-break year with a brand-new dynamic quarterback in Colton Joseph.

Neutral site, new quarterback energy, a desperate coaching staff. Anything can happen in Week 1. Frankly, I don’t see this one happening because I’m that high on Notre Dame. We have seen crazier things happen in Week 1 openers, but unfortunately the chalk answer is the right one in this case. Sometimes 1 plus 1 equals 2.

Louisville vs. Ole Miss is your upset to watch going into the opening weekend

I really think Louisville has the best chance to beat Ole Miss. It’s a neutral site in Nashville, Tennessee, and out of all the Week 1 matchups on the board, this is the most likely upset. Jeff Brohm as an underdog with a dynamic quarterback and a dynamic rushing attack brings a lot of elements that could fuel a high-scoring game against a Trinidad Chambliss-led Ole Miss offense. Louisville honestly could pull it off.

Ole Miss will have talent across the board, but Brohm’s teams have a way of punching above their weight class when nobody expects them to. A fast-tempo Louisville offense in a neutral-site environment where the crowd isn’t stacked 90-10 against them is a real recipe for an early-season stunner.

I’m not saying it’s a lock. I’m saying if you’re looking for the most realistic upset candidate in Week 1 to keep an eye on, Louisville over Ole Miss is the one I’m stamping.
