Eric Bieniemy had other options at HC & OC that he was weighing prior to spending an entire day at the Chiefs’ facilities
The Chiefs are lucky to get Bieniemy at OC.
A marriage between the Kansas City Chiefs and Eric Bieniemy has just about been renewed, and the honeymoon feeling this time around is that the Chiefs beat out competitors for their guy.
Josina Anderson reports that the Chiefs are sending a contract for Eric Bieniemy to review as their next offensive coordinator. Bieniemy spent all day Wednesday meeting with the organization. He has considered other head-coaching and offensive-coordinator offers before flying to KC this morning.
Chiefs get their guy, and a huge win that comes with it
When it comes to battles for certain OC candidates, the Chiefs often lose them. Certain coaches don’t want to be in a polarizing position like this one, where they’re under head coach Andy Reid, not calling the plays or designing the scheme. It’s understandable because when the offense is bad, the OC gets the blame, and when it’s good, the head coach gets the praise. We just saw a prime example of that with Matt Nagy.
Bieniemy was looking for a head-coaching opportunity in his first few years as an OC for the Chiefs, especially after winning a Super Bowl. However, he couldn’t find any luck. He tried his hand at getting away from the Chiefs to prove himself, working as the OC for the Washington Commanders, then the UCLA Bruins, and finally the Chicago Bears RB coach this last season.
The marriage between Bieniemy and KC is perfect, though. He’s okay with taking the blame and pressure that comes with being the coach of Patrick Mahomes. He’s okay with getting on to players and holding them accountable when something needs to be said. Most importantly, he’s a winner and is willing to do whatever it takes to win.
The former RB coach, now Chiefs coordinator for a second time, is hopefully bringing some new ideas to the table. He is a guy that Reid will listen to, and it helps that the best offensive years in the dynasty were when Bieniemy was the OC.
Since Nagy became the Chiefs’ OC in 2023 after being fired by the Bears, the offense has declined each year. In 2022, the Chiefs averaged 29 points per game. In 2023, they averaged 21; in 2024, 22; and this past season, 21.
Before Nagy, KC averaged at least 28 points per game in each Mahomes-era season, including 35 once. Nagy is linked to recent offensive struggles despite personnel factors. Under Bieniemy, the offense was more effective. We will see if it goes back to that, or if it was just a coincidence.
