It’s a long shot, but Alabama can cap off a busy portal with a flashy addition.

The Alabama Crimson Tide had one of the best transfer portals you could ask for. Sure, there was the Hollywood Smothers situation, and Alabama lost Isaiah Horton to an SEC rival, but while it isn’t sexy or flashy, the Crimson Tide rebuilt its trenches from the ground up.

With the portal closed, the thought was that what you see is what you get when it comes to Alabama’s wide receiver room. However, late on Wednesday night, despite the portal closing nearly a week ago, a new name was announced as an entrance and he would be a perfect fit for Alabama.

Duke WR Cooper Barkate enters transfer portal

Now, before you get your hopes up, Barkate is largely believed to be heading to the Miami Hurricanes. Why? Because his quarterback from Duke, Darian Mensah, also officially entered the portal on Wednesday, and he’s largely believed to be the Hurricanes’ number one target at signal caller.

However, there is a big wrinkle here. Mensah has been told by Duke that he cannot enroll at any school, much less transfer and play football, or he will face legal action. Now, we have seen that play in favor of the player as recently as the Trinidad Chambliss situation, but if this situation lingers, perhaps Barkate looks for another landing spot.

While they may have struck out, Alabama was heavily involved in the Cam Coleman sweepstakes before he chose the Texas Longhorns, and they could certainly use another veteran in what is both an inexperienced and lean corps after Ryan Williams and Lotzeir Brooks.

So while it feels like a long shot, if covering the transfer portal teaches you anything, it’s that until the player has officially signed on the dotted line, nothing is set in stone, and players can change their minds in an instant. We’ll see if that happens with Barkate.
