Ole Miss Rebels fans still waiting on Trinidad Chambliss answer as important recruiting decisions loom
Trinidad Chambliss still waiting on his lawsuit against the NCAA to find out where his future lies
It’s already February. Trinidad Chambliss and Ole Miss Rebels fans still don’t know if he is going to be able to return to Oxford for one more year. What’s the hold up? There are hugely important events coming up for both the Rebels program and Chambliss himself, and everyone needs to finally have an answer on this elite quarterback’s future.
Signing day for high school recruits is Wednesday February 4. Ole Miss will begin spring practices in March. Chambliss need to participate in his NFL Pro Day (also likely in March) if his waiver to receive one more collegiate year is denied.
So, what’s the hold up? In short, the court, and the NCAA’s complete ineptitude once again.
Trinidad Chambliss and Ole Miss waiting on NCAA and legal ruling
Chambliss has already been denied a waiver multiple times by the NCAA to grant him an additional year of college football eligibility. If special eligibility were somehow granted that would, of course, completely change the game for both Chambliss and Ole Miss considering how dominant he was last season.
Chambliss would most definitely be compensated multiple millions of dollars for a single season of football, potentially boosting his already intriguing NFL Draft stock. Ole Miss could possibly make another push deep into the college football playoff.
Everyone saw how special Chambliss was against Georgia in his magical 362-yard College Football Playoff performance. The NCAA apparently doesn’t want to see any more of that.
The NCAA has now heard Chambliss’ official appeal in his case (as of the final week in January). A ruling on that appeal could come any day now, but the NCAA seems set on letting the courts decide, rather than taking any action themselves.
Chambliss and his legal team officially filed a lawsuit against the NCAA in mid-January, hoping to seek at least a temporary — and perhaps permanent — injunction that would allow him to participate in offseason activities with Ole Miss. Then of course, hopefully also granting him eligibility to play the full 2026 college football season.
If it feels like there hasn’t been any big news on this particular lawsuit, it’s because there really hasn’t been lately. The “preliminary injunction” to grant Chambliss eligibility for a sixth season will take place on February 12. At that point, Ole Miss fans and Chambliss will likely get a better idea of what their future could hold.
Still, despite knowing when to expect an update, the timing is rather unfortunate for all involved.
Why?
Every single recruit set to make a decision on signing day with Ole Miss won’t know who their quarterback is going to be, when and if they sign with the Rebels. Head coach Pete Golding and the Ole Miss staff still can’t know whether or not they need to scramble and sign an additional quarterback recruit for the upcoming season. Rebels fans might be happy they have their quarterback of the future in former five star Deuce Knight, but landing Chambliss would obviously be a game-changer for this year. As for Chambliss, he still doesn’t know if he needs to gear up for the NFL, or plan to return to Oxford once again.
