Georgia Bulldogs suffer a loss amid National Signing Day action, but Kirby Smart will maintain momentum
Georgia loses their outside linebackers coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe to the Dallas Cowboys, but the defense should be just fine in Athens
The Georgia Bulldogs have been on a recruiting heater lately and as National Signing Day action rages on, but Kirby Smart did suffer one loss they’re going to have to make sure they account for in the coming weeks.
Chidera Uzo-Diribe to leave Georgia Bulldogs for Dallas Cowboys
Georgia is set to lose their outside linebackers coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe to the Dallas Cowboys. He’s been a key assistant staffer with the team since the Bulldogs’ 2022 national championship season. Will the Bulldogs maintain continuity and momentum with their pass rush now that Uzo-Diribe is gone? If coach Smart’s track record means anything at all, they should be fine, but he certainly was a special coach that will be missed.
Prior to joining the Georgia Bulldogs back in 2022, Uzo-Diribe quickly asserted himself as one of the fastest-rising impressive young assistant coaches in all of college football.
Uzo-Diribe, a former defensive tackle for the Colorado Buffaloes back in the early 2010s, began his coaching career at his alma mater. He was a graduate assistant for Colorado until 2018, but then was stolen away by Kansas for two years, working primarily with the defensive line there. Shortly after his stint with the Jayhawks, he landed with SMU, jumped to TCU briefly, but Georgia made sure to steal him away for the Bulldogs’ 2022 national championship run.
Coach Smart put Uzo-Diribe to work with the team’s outside linebackers and saw positive results right away. So yes, for those keeping score at home, he went from grad assistant to major positional coach for a premier blue blood college football program in less than five years.
What Chidera Uzo-Diribe meant to the Georgia Bulldogs
Once at Georgia, Uzo-Diribe made his impact felt every single year. He helped develop elite Bulldogs players left and right. Nolan Smith, Mykel Williams, Jalon Walker, and others all became first round picks under the tutelage of Uzo-Diribe. Georgia’s pass rush thrived, creating ridiculous havoc on most every snap for the first three seasons of his tenure with the Bulldogs.
This past season was more of a challenge as Georgia leaned on youth and inexperience more than ever along the defensive front. The Bulldogs started slow, but by midseason Uzo-Diribe had his pass rushers nearly doubling their pressure rates and sacks converted.
There’s no doubt about it, Uzo-Diribe will be missed in Athens. Should all the credit for Georgia’s defensive front dominance and development over the last four seasons go to him? No, but he’s an instrumental piece of it. Coach Smart and crew will need to make sure they pick the right replacement to maintain momentum in recruiting and development up front on defense.
This upcoming season should be a win-now opportunity if Georgia can get the most out of Gabe Harris Jr., Chris Cole, Quintavius Johnson, and Joseph Jonah-Ajonye on the defensive edges. Making that happen might be a bit more difficult now with one of the Bulldogs’ best staffers gone, but coach Smart will make sure it gets done.
