Commanders’ path to blockbuster offseason trade for superstar player is easier than people think
The Commanders will have to decide if they want in on a trade for superstar pass rusher Maxx Crosby, but they will have the ammo for it.
The Washington Commanders’ offseason has just begun, and there’s already been plenty of changes with many more ahead.
The defense received an overhaul on the coaching staff, with Daronte Jones taking over as the new defensive coordinator. Jones also filled his staff with top talent, such as defensive line coach Eric Henderson, and now the roster needs talent as well.
The Commanders will have many opportunities to add talent on the defense this offseason, but there’s one that may be too good to pass up on. General manager Adam Peters has to decide if you want to throw his hat in the ring for a blockbuster trade for star pass rusher Maxx Crosby.
Should the Commanders trade for pass rusher Maxx Crosby?
Last offseason, the Commanders were linked to multiple pass rushers such as Trey Hendrickson and Myles Garrett, but of course, nothing happened. The EDGE position is still the biggest glaring hole on the roster for the Commanders, and Peters already pointed out that they will be adding an EDGE this offseason.
Those strong remarks might make them think about trading for Maxx Crosby, who is likely on his way out of Las Vegas. FOX NFL Sunday reporter and insider Jay Glazer told Yahoo Sports at the Super Bowl radio row that he believes Crosby wants out of Las Vegas, and that he will be traded before the 2026 NFL Draft.
Of course, many teams around the league will call and make an offer for Crosby, but should the Commanders be one of them? That’s something Peters will have to decide, but they absolutely have everything it takes to get him.
The Commanders have enough ammo for Maxx Crosby
The Commanders only have six picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, but they have something that other teams that are expected to be interested in Crosby don’t: the No. 7 overall pick in the draft. The Raiders would obviously prefer the No. 7 overall pick from the Commanders over a later pick from the Detroit Lions, the Philadelphia Eagles, or the New England Patriots.
It will obviously take more than just one first-round pick to get Crosby, and more of a haul identical to what the Green Bay Packers traded for Micah Parsons, who is two years younger. The Packers gave up DT Kenny Clark and two first-round picks.
The Commanders would likely have to give up the No. 7 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, their 2027 first-round pick, DT Daron Payne, and another pick as high as a third or a fourth in 2027 as well. That’s a lot of draft capital, but worth it for a player like Crosby, especially in a down draft like 2026. The 2027 NFL Draft picks are the ones that hurt. His contract isn’t an issue either, and it’s very tradable for a team and the Raiders.
The Raiders only take a dead cap hit of $5.1 million in 2026, and save $30 milion if they trade Crosby. The team that trades for him takes on his new contract, which is a bargain at this point in the market, and with the salary cap getting a boost.
He doesn’t have anything guaranteed after 2027, so he might want to rework his deal in the near future, but that’s still not a problem for a team. He gets his 2027 fully guaranteed amount of $29.7 million, triggered in March of 2026 as well. This contract is very tradeable for the Raiders and easy to take on for the Commanders if they decide to pursue Crosby.
