The Washington Commanders’ offseason is underway, and it’s time to get to work to get back to a winning team next season.

General manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn had their end of the season press conference to reflect on the nightmare season and where things will change moving forward. Peters is a very transparent general manager, but he also keeps his hand close to his chest and gives vague answers when he needs to. That’s why one response took me by surprise when he gave a very upfront and detailed response on improving the roster.

Adam Peters says the exact position he wants to attack this offseason, and it’s the right answer

The Commanders have a lot of needs on the roster, and the most free agents in the NFL. Both sides of the ball need upgrades at multiple positions, but Peters strictly named the EDGE position as one that you can expect him to be aggressive in attacking this offseason.

“You know, I think there’s a lot of spots [to improve] that I think where we can look at,” Peters said. “I think certainly another pass rusher would be something we’d definitely be looking for, whether that’s the draft or free agency. I think we have a lot of good options in both of those areas.”

You never hear Peters come out and say something like that, as he loves to keep his plans to himself and not let other teams know what he needs, so this is very notable. This tells you that they will actually address it this offseason, and everything is on the table in free agency, the NFL Draft, and any trades that can be made.

The Commanders have many options to add a pass rusher this offseason

The roster evaluation period has already started, and Peters knows he needs to add a game-changing pass rusher at some point this offseason. Dorance Armstrong suffered a severe knee injury, and we don’t know when he will be back, so they need to have someone else ready. The Commanders are projected to have a top-5 salary cap space available in the NFL, and have options in free agency.

The Commanders will have players like Trey Hendrickson, Boye Mafe, Kwity Paye, and many others to sign in free agency, and plenty of money to do so. Also, who knows if a player like Maxx Crosby, Jermaine Johnson, or Travon Walker becomes available for a trade this offseason as well. They will likely head into the NFL Draft with an addition already in place, and leave the door wide open for taking one in the draft as well.

The EDGE rusher prospects are plentiful this year, and the Commanders can pick any kind they want. Whether it’s a bigger, stronger frame like Rueben Bain Jr. or Keldric Faulk, or more of a speed rusher like David Bailey or Cashius Howell, they will have their options on the board. There are also starting caliber EDGE rushers that could be selected with their second pick, which is in the third round. Guys like Dani Dennis-Sutton and Gabe Jacas could be available in the third and be instant impact producers.

Regardless of what they decide, it was surprising, yet refreshing to hear Peters say that EDGE was one exact position he will look to attack this offseason.
