The Lions could possibly lose one of their new coaches before he ever coaches a game in Detroit
Life comes at you pretty fast in the NFL
The Detroit Lions have not finalized their new coaching staff, and they may have to hold off a minute because one of the guys they just hired is expected to get some serious consideration elsewhere.
NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler believes new Lions coach, Mike Kafka, is a name to watch for the offensive coordinator role with the Seahawks
The Seahawks just won the Super Bowl on Sunday, and now that it’s over, their offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, is off to take the head coach job with the Las Vegas Raiders. At one point, the Seahawks interviewed Kafka for their head coach job, and apparently, he made an impression.
“Some people I’ve talked to here in San Francisco think Seattle coach Mike Macdonald will want to keep a similar, Kubiak-style system in place,” Fowler wrote. “One back-pocket item to store away: Seattle was very impressed with Mike Kafka during head coach interviews two years ago. He’s now a senior assistant in Detroit and could be a name to watch.”
Obviously, no interview has been set, and at this time, it’s just speculation. If Kafka does get an interview, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened to the Lions. When Detroit hired Scottie Montgomery, he hadn’t been on the job for a week when the Buccaneers came calling to interview him for their offensive coordinator role.
The Lions did not block that, and they likely wouldn’t block Kafka if he had a bigger opportunity. So don’t expect that. The one thing that could help, though, is that Kafka seems to be interested in a head coach opportunity.
So maybe he might want to stay here and see if there’s an opportunity to grow under Dan Campbell. We’ll have to see what happens and whether the Seahawks even wind up interviewing him.
