Dan Campbell does not want you to forget about this under-the-radar Lions cornerback
Lions head coach Dan Campbell just stopped answering someone else’s question to tell me about a player we shouldn’t be ignoring.
You don’t see this happen a whole lot when you’re covering press conferences, but on Monday, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell did something fun. He answered my question and then went on to begin answering another question, and then stopped and turned back towards me to add one more player to his answer for my question.
I think it says something about the extra player he brought up that he felt he needed to get him involved. The initial question was about the cornerback two battle and where he sees it right now. Here’s the first part of the answer:
“Rock’s (Ya-Sin) making plays. We’ve been with Rock, we know what he’s about. We know the way he competes. We got high hopes for Rakestraw too. And there’s been, you see, flashes with him. Man, there’s some good stuff.” Campbell said. “There’s some just same thing inconsistencies with him a little bit, but then I would say those are less and less every day, which is good news. Whiteside has made plays every day, special teams and on defense every day. Right? There has not been a day yet where he has not made plays. So this is about to get interesting. It’s going to be really interesting.”
Then Campbell moved on to the next question and then felt he needed to stop and go back to me to talk about this guy.
“Hold on one second. The other is (Khalil) Dorsey. Dorsey looks good. Okay. Dorsey’s making plays too. We look at that cornerback group. We got a pretty good mix here, young players and some guys that have had experience previously. So look, I mean, this thing. We’ll see. I mean, it’s it’s pretty exciting.”
Dorsey has been with the Lions since 2022, and it’s been primarily as a gunner and special teams guy. He’s been very good at that, but now it would seem he’s going to get a chance to fight for that second starting job, and if he keeps making plays, you never know.
