David Blough told Jayden Daniels exactly what he wanted to hear after becoming Commanders’ new offensive coordinator
New offensive coordinator David Blough knows how special quarterback Jayden Daniels is, and he told him that the offense will be built around him.
Drastic changes were made this offseason with the Washington Commanders coaching staff, and there’s a new play caller on both sides of the ball.
Head coach Dan Quinn elected to move on from Kliff Kingsbury after a down season, and they swiftly promoted David Blough as the new offensive coordinator. It was a move that shocked a lot of people, and even quarterback Jayden Daniels was hurt by the decision since he’s close with Kingsbury.
Daniels was also really excited about Blough, and even moreso after he told Daniels everything he wanted to hear about the offense moving forward.
Jayden Daniels speaks on what David Blough told him about the offense
Everyone knows how special Daniels is when he’s healthy, and this is a critical offseason for everyone, but Daniels mainly. Learning a new offense can throw a curve in the offseason as well, but Blough knows what he wants to do, and he gave Daniels a preview of what to expect.
Daniels spoke to NFL on NBC about Blough’s new look offense and what to expect, but most importantly, how he will build it around Daniels.
“I think he’s going to throw his own flavor on there,” Daniels said. “Obviously, he’s been around Kliff for two years. So what he’s learned from Kliff is probably some stuff he’s going to integrate into the offense. He’s been around Ben Johnson. He’s been around a lot of guys. So we talked about it. I’ve been very vocal, like stuff I want to do. He’s been open, like he tells me all the time, like, you know, we want to build this offense for you. So that’s kind of what a quarterback wants to hear.”
“I’m super excited for him to get his opportunity. I know what he can do. I know the work that he puts in, because me and him sat out there constantly, had conversations, and we talk all the time. So I’m just super excited to get back out there. You know, when we got OTAs, we got mandatory mini camp to really see you know what he’s cooking up.”
Jayden Daniels will still have continuity with David Blough
Daniels has always been vocal about what he wants to do on offense and had the trust of Kingsbury to call his own plays and take shots. He still has that with Blough as his QB coach for his first two seasons, and now his offensive coordinator and play caller. There will absolutely be new changes and a new scheme, but you can expect some of the same, like the up-tempo at times.
Daniels went under center lower than any other quarterback in the league, so it’ll be interesting to see if Blough integrates that into the offense like Drake Maye and Caleb Williams had to in their offenses. Expect more of the Ben Johnson style of offense that Blough played in for almost his entire career, and less of the college-style, shotgun-heavy approach Kingsbury took.
But regardless, Daniels will have input in the offense, and also be asked to do new things that he knows will be good for him.
