The Cleveland Browns received clarity on Thursday with the Jim Schwartz situation. News broke on Friday that Schwartz resigned as the Browns’ defensive coordinator

New head coach Todd Monken now has the task of finding a defensive coordinator for the Browns, a role they hoped they wouldn’t have to fill. Cleveland wanted to keep Schwartz despite skipping over him to make Monken the head coach.

Todd Monken’s effort may have been telling on his actual feelings about keeping Jim Schwartz

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini put out an interesting report showing Monken may not have been all that pressed to keep Schwartz on the staff. It also may have been the final straw for Schwartz and the Browns.

“Monken, after accepting the job, waited three days before contacting Schwartz and expressing a desire to keep him in his current role,” Russini reported.

“Schwartz, with two years remaining on his contract, was not enthused.”

Coaches are tasked with getting their coaching staff together rather quickly after landing the job. For three days to go by, according to Russini, doesn’t show that Monken was all that concerned with keeping Schwartz in the fold.

There’s no denying the success that Schwartz led in Cleveland on the defensive side over the last three seasons. Cleveland had him in the mix to be the head coach and passing over him is the main reason he’s resigned from his position.

Cleveland is in search of a new defensive coordinator and they’ll have options. The Browns’ defense is one of the best in the league and they could just drive to promote someone like safeties coach Ephrahim Banda to be the guy.

Only time will tell if the Browns made the right decision by passing over Schwartz. It was a risk to pass over him and that risk played out by Schwartz not being with the team now. Monken waiting half a week to contact Schwartz only adds to the frustration the former Browns defensive coordinator probably felt.
