Former Bears wide receiver admits the obvious about what really went wrong during Chicago’s disappointing 2024 season
It’s no secret what the problem was inside the Chicago Bears building two years ago and now someone finally said it.
People have yet to truly appreciate the night and day difference between the season the Chicago Bears had in 2024 and the season the organization had in 2025.
A clear example of that is the fact that head coach Ben Johnson received just one vote for AP Coach of the Year despite taking over a 5-12 team and leading them to an 11-6 record that included an NFC North title and a playoff win.
I mean people really don’t understand how bad things were during that 2024 season and a big reason why is because few players from that team offered to really speak out about the elephant in the room that led to such a disappointing season. And finally one former Bears player decided to say it.
Keenan Allen blames coaching staff for disappointing 2024 season with the Bears
“When I was there, the team that we had had a lot of talent,” former Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen said during Super Bowl week. “Just thought that we were held back just by… I won’t give specifics… but the roster was definitely in a good place to where we could have did some things, as they did this year. Definitely hats off to them, they did a great job.”
While Allen didn’t specifically say it, we all know the word he was holding back was coaching. The Bears were held back from coaching in 2024 and everyone could tell watching that team play.
Ten weeks into that season, the Bears parted ways with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron and then three weeks later head coach Matt Eberflus followed him out of the door. The job those two did with that team was pathetic at best considering the level of talent on that team.
You’re talking about an offense led by a rookie quarterback in Caleb Williams with weapons at his disposal such as DJ Moore, Allen, Rome Odunze, Cole Kmet, and D’Andre Swift. It’s worth mentioning that the offensive line got some massive improvements from 2024-2025 that played a huge role in the team’s turnaround but getting the right coaches in the building made the real difference.
It’s a shame Allen didn’t get the opportunity to work with that staff because I had high hopes for the veteran wide receiver when the Bears acquired him via trade from the Los Angeles Chargers. Those coaches absolutely ruined what could have been and wasted a full season for all of those players.
Thankfully, the Bears now have one of the top coaches in the league steering the ship with a five-star staff alongside him, and all of Chicago is better for it.
