For the second time in less than a month, the Tennessee Vols let a big halftime lead slip away against the Kentucky Wildcats.

Tennessee led Kentucky 47-33 at halftime in Lexington on Saturday night, but the Vols couldn’t close as they were outscored 41-24 in the second half of the 74-71 loss.

Last month, the Vols led Kentucky by 17 points in the second half in Knoxville, but the Wildcats rallied for an 80-78 win.

“Our guys are really disappointed,” said Vols head coach Rick Barnes after the loss. “We think that we are as good as anybody that we play on any given night. But we can’t make the mistakes we made.”

Tennessee has now lost five of its last six games against Kentucky.

Vols guard says Tennessee is still a better team than Kentucky

Vols sophomore guard Bishop Boswell made it clear after Saturday night’s loss to Kentucky that he feels Tennessee is still the better team.

“I think the most frustrating thing is we know we’re a better team than them,” said Boswell. “We haven’t put 40 minutes of basketball together against them. That comes down to me, especially on the defensive end, just being that anchor. And I didn’t do the job I needed to.”

The Vols have shown their potential this season, particularly in a big win against Houston in November and in a recent four-game winning streak that included victories at Alabama and Georgia.

But the results are what they are. Tennessee is 16-7 and 6-4 in the SEC. Kentucky, meanwhile, is 17-7 and 8-3 in the SEC.

Championship teams find a way to consistently finish games. Tennessee has championship talent, but it isn’t playing like a championship team. Until that changes, statements like Boswell’s after the loss to Kentucky will ring hollow.
