Mike Macdonald says the Seahawks wouldn’t be Super Bowl champions if it wasn’t for overlooked individual
The Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl champions, largely because of a coach fans and media members rarely talk about.
Yes, the Seattle Seahawks are Super Bowl champions.
And though that statement is largely the result of a roster loaded with talent, it’s also about an exemplary coaching staff. Surely, you know about Mike Macdonald, the head coach and defensive mastermind. You also know about hotshot offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who confirmed Sunday night he will become the Las Vegas Raiders head coach after Sunday’s win.
But many fans around the NFL overlook a crucial coach who helped lead the Seahawks to a Super Bowl win. And if you ask Macdonald, the Lombardi Trophy wouldn’t be Seattle’s if it wasn’t for him.
Macdonald shouts out overlooked Seahawks coach
Speaking to reporters in his postgame postgame press conference, Macdonald was very clear what kind of impact assistant head coach Leslie Frazier has on the Seahawks.
“We would not be having this press conference right now if Leslie wasn’t a Seahawk,” Macdonald said.
To him, it isn’t a surprise.
Frazier was one of Macdonald’s first hires when he took over the franchise in 2024. The timing was perfect. Before that, Frazier had unexpectedly stepped away from his role as Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator before the 2023 season. He made it clear he intended to return, and Macdonald made the most of his chance. What Macdonald got in Frazier was 25 years of NFL coaching experience.
“He was the first person I called when I got the job,” Macdonald added. “Hopefully I made it very clear to him that we needed him. He’s just a great complement to my skillset, to my personality. He’s such a great connector with the players, he’s such a great communicator.”
And as much of a defensive mastermind as Macdonald is, the 66-year-old Frazier still keeps him in check.
“He calls our bluff when we’re full of crap on defense when we do stupid stuff with game planning,” Macdonald said. “Which happens probably more than we want. He’s been tremendous.”
Frazier and Macdonald spent one year on the same staff with the Baltimore Ravens back in 2016. Back then, Frazier was the secondary coach and Macdonald a coaching intern. Little did they know they’d be raising the Lombardi Trophy together one decade later.
