Postgame comment suggests Patriots should have given former Tennessee QB Josh Dobbs the nod during Super Bowl LX

The former Vol didn’t see the field, even though he perhaps should have.

The New England Patriots delivered one of the worst offensive performances we’ve seen in a while in their 29-13 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX.

While there were many culprits to blame, including an offensive line that allowed six sacks and a pick six, quarterback Drake Maye simply looked like the polar opposite of the MVP contender self that he had throughout a Cinderella season for the Patriots.

Maye had been dealing with a right shoulder issue in practice, but he told reporters he was good to go this week. As it turns out, perhaps that wasn’t the case.

Patriots QB Drake Maye received a pain-killing injection in his hurting shoulder before Super Bowl LX

After the game, Maye said he received a pain-killing injection in his shoulder before the game.

“I shot it up, so not much feeling,” Maye said. “It was good to go, and it felt all right.”

However, Maye’s performance looked nothing like alright. He struggled to complete simple passes at times, misfiring on short and intermediate throws that were there. He ultimately threw for 295 yards and two touchdowns, but the vast majority of that came after the Seahawks had built up a commanding lead in the second half and let their foot off the gas late.

In short, he looked like a guy who was dealing with both an elite defense and a hurting shoulder that were both limiting him.

Backup QB Joshua Dobbs never entered the game but perhaps should have

Former Vols quarterback Joshua Dobbs was not without preparation for the game. He took the bulk of first team reps the Friday of the bye week with Maye dealing with the shoulder injury.

And while it’s not likely that his presence would have been the difference in the outcome, the Patriots were stuck in neutral with a quarterback who didn’t look like himself and an offense that could get absolutely nothing going. New England didn’t even get into field goal range until they were down 19-0 in the fourth quarter. Dobbs, running ability has made a difference in spot starts and would have added at least another element for the Seattle defense to have to deal with.

It would have been great for Tennessee fans to see Dobbs playing on football’s biggest stage, but it ultimately didn’t happen, even if, in retrospect, it probably should have.
