Detroit Lions offensive tackle Dan Skipper (70) celebrates 34-17 win over Chicago Bears as he exits the field at Soldier Field in Chicago, Ill. on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2024.

There you go. Last week, we speculated that after the Lions moved assistant offensive line coach Steve Oliver to tight ends coach, bringing back freshly retired tackle Dan Skipper to be on the coaching staff made a lot of sense. Well…

The Lions have hired Dan Skipper to be on their coaching staff

CBS Detroit’s Rachel Hopmayer started off Wednesday with the big news. It would appear that Skipper will indeed be talking on Oliver’s old gig, and he’ll be the Lions’ new assistant offensive line coach. Although we’ll have to wait for the Lions staff announcement to fully confirm that.

Skipper brings a lot of experience to the table. He played nine years in the league and spent eight of those with the Lions off and on. He can teach about playing the position, and he can even teach a little bit about playing some jumbo tight end, as Hopmayer notes. That’s a lot of on-field experience.

Skipper now gets to learn to coach from one of the best offensive line coaches in the league, Hank Fraley, and he can help work with the young talent that’s on the line right now, and work to install what the Lions want to do with the benefit of knowing exactly how to implement it, since he’s been doing it for a long time. This is a really solid hire for Detroit.
