Oklahoma Sooners newest coach already has his first priority mission set to help continue Sooners’ defensive dominance
LaMar Morgan will have to hit the ground running for the Sooners.
The Oklahoma Sooners were quick to replace cornerbacks coach Jay Valai, who departed for the Buffalo Bills in the same capacity to join Joe Brady’s first staff, hiring former Michigan Wolverines secondary coach LaMar Morgan.
Morgan has spent the last two seasons coaching the Wolverines’ secondary and inherits a talented room to move forward with. However, his first (and most important) task is to continue the Sooners’ momentum in the 2027 recruiting class, and it starts with a pair of dynamite four-star talents.
LaMar Morgan’s top priority for the Sooners
Oklahoma’s top-ranked 2027 recruiting class already has a pair of talented cornerbacks in Mikhail McCreary and Mikyal Davis. However, the Sooners are gunning to restock their entire secondary, and that starts with landing a pair of star talents in Gabriel Osborne and JuJu Johnson.
Osborne, an in-state star out of Mustang, is one of the best athletes I’ve seen at corner, boasting offers from just about every major program across the country. A football and basketball star, Osborne is a must-have recruit for the Sooners out of the class. He was already a heavy favorite to remain in state with Oklahoma, but the departure of Valai could slightly open the door for the rest of the country. Morgan has to slam that door shut before anyone gets any momentum.
Johnson, another top-100 recruit in the 2027 class, is a West Coast star from California. Despite a knee injury limiting his junior season, Johnson’s buzz hasn’t slowed down, and the Sooners remain a top priority for him. Oklahoma has had success out west recently due to the efforts of Director of Player Personnel Stacey Ford, who has already struck up a strong relationship with Johnson.
Fortunately for the Sooners, Morgan has been an outstanding recruiter in his career and has already established a relationship with both players during his time at Michigan. With the Wolverines, Morgan reeled in multiple four-stars in Shamari Earls, Kainoa Winston, Jordan Young, Jayden Sanders, Jamarion Vincent, Jordan Deck, and Jadais Richard in just two seasons at the helm of Michigan’s secondary.
If he can replicate that success with the Sooners, Oklahoma is going to be poised for tremendous success defensively over the next several seasons. They are already laying the foundation for what can be their best recruiting class ever. If Morgan secures this pair of stars, Oklahoma’s future becomes that much brighter.
