The Tennessee Vols lost a key commit earlier this week.

On Friday, 2027 three-star defensive back Kamauri Whitfield decommitted from Tennessee.

Whitfield, 5-11/185 pounds from Orlando, FL, is rated by 247Sports as the No. 37 cornerback in the nation and the No. 34 player in the state of Florida. He had been committed to Tennessee since October.

A big reason why Whitfield decommitted was because of Tennessee’s defensive staff changes this offseason.

There’s more to Whitfield’s decision to decommit, however, than just the fact that Tennessee made major defensive coaching changes this offseason.

Kamauri Whitfield decided it wasn’t right to show interest in other programs while still committed to Tennessee

Whitfield is still high on the Vols despite the coaching staff changes, but he also wants to take a look at other schools while getting to know Tennessee’s new defensive coaches.

As a result, Whitfield told 247Sports that it wasn’t “right” to take visits to other programs while committed to Tennessee.

“I really appreciate the opportunity Tennessee has given me and the belief they have shown in me. After thinking it through with my family, I’ve decided that I need to reopen my recruitment and decommit,” said Whitfield to 247Sports. “This wasn’t an easy decision, and I’m grateful for everything the program has done for me. With all the defensive coaching changes, I felt like I needed to step back and make sure I was making the best long-term decision for me and my family. This process helped me grow and really evaluate what I want and need. Tennessee is still in my top choices of schools.”

Vols fans may not be happy that Whitfield decommitted this week, but they’ve gotta love the character and maturity he showed while making this decision. If anything, it should make Tennessee’s coaching staff want Whitfield even more.
