A dream Chiefs reunion is now possible, but there’s a major hurdle that could prevent it from coming together

The door is now open for Tyreek Hill and the Chiefs to reunite, but there’s something that could stand in the way.

The Kansas City Chiefs never quite looked like the team that has dominated the AFC in recent memory. Luckily for them, a potential move just became available that would help them look more like the Chiefs, who have regularly competed for Super Bowls over the last decade.

The Chiefs ended up trading star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2022 season. And they’ve been trying to replace his deep threat ability ever since.

The Dolphins are now releasing the five-time All-Pro and eight-time Pro Bowler. It seems safe to wonder if a reunion between Hill and the Chiefs could be on the horizon.

Dolphins set to release Tyreek Hill, opening the door for a potential reunion with the Chiefs

The Chiefs got quite the haul to trade Hill, as he netted them five draft picks in total, headlined by first and second round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. But even with the value of the trade being sufficient, it hasn’t given them the same level of impact Hill had on the field.

The trio of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill was one of the best in NFL history and will be remembered by Chiefs fans forever. Many believe Kelce could be coming back for at least one more year, and the expectation is that he will re-sign with the Chiefs for one last hoorah on what has been a Hall of Fame-caliber career.

Tyreek Hill’s Dolphins Stats Quick Facts

  • 2022: 119 receptions for 1,710 yards and seven touchdowns (17 games).
  • 2023: 119 receptions for 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns (16 games).
  • 2024: 81 receptions for 959 yards and six touchdowns (17 games).
  • 2025: 21 receptions for 265 yards and one touchdown (4 games).

If that’s true, the Chiefs have one last chance to reunite that historical trio for one more season in Kansas City. That opportunity has now presented itself, with Hill set to hit free agency. Eric Bieniemy is also back with the team as offensive coordinator, something Hill seemed to take notice of just weeks ago. There is still one final hurdle that could derail those plans, though.

Hill suffered a significant leg injury that ended his 2025 season, and he was placed on the injured reserve list. There is no certainty that he will be ready to play when the 2026 season begins. Would the Chiefs be willing to sign Hill with that in mind? Or would they try to wait and see how he looks after rehabbing the injury, risking another team swooping in to ruin the potential reunion?

I can’t imagine that at 31 years old, there’s a place Hill would rather spend the final years of his career than Kansas City with Mahomes and Kelce. Is it time for one more chapter of their historical story to be written, or will that already legendary story stay as it is? We will have to wait and see how this all plays out.
