The Sooners are in a great position to land five-star Cooper Witten.

The Oklahoma Sooners are gearing up to pull in what could be their best recruiting class in program history with their already strong 2027 class. However, to do that, they have to hold onto their current commits and close out strong with other top targets across the country.

According to the latest intel, however, Oklahoma might have already slammed the door on the rest of the country for a five-star recruit.

Cooper Witten likely to be a Sooner?

The Sooners hired Cooper Witten’s dad, Jason, to be their tight ends coach. While Cooper wasn’t why they hired Jason, it no doubt helps in their pursuit of his commitment. So far, it’s paid off. According to several Texas A&M recruiting analysts I’ve spoken with and read, all of them would be surprised if Witten’s interest in the Aggies remained. Texas A&M has since moved on to other targets at linebacker.

The Tennessee Volunteers appear to be in second place, albeit at what seems to be a somewhat distant second place.

The Sooners and Venables were the first school to seriously pursue Witten, and it’s beginning to pay off. Witten loves Brent Venables and his scheme, and has reportedly been enthralled with his role in Venables’ defense. It’s easy to see why the Sooners are so interested in Witten as well, given his pedigree and elite film out of high school.

If the Sooners can add Witten to a class that already features tantalizing talent Taven Epps, that would be their best 1-2 punch of defensive recruits that I can recall. I believe both of those players are elite talents with NFL futures ahead of them, and having Brent Venables at the helm for both makes me incredibly intrigued by their futures.

Oklahoma’s Future Freaks recruiting weekend is on the horizon at the beginning of March. If they can bring Witten to Norman during that, I think they’d be in great shape to put this recruitment to bed.
