Patrick Mahomes just channeled his inner Tom Brady and it could help him pass the seven-time Super Bowl champion all-time

The Chiefs need it from him, too.

On Wednesday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made the expected decision to restructure his contract. This move freed up more than $43 million in cap space for the Chiefs and should trigger a domino effect of additional cost-saving moves.

Mahomes’ restructure is similar to what Tom Brady did for years

The Chiefs now have just $10 million to work with, and free agency is right around the corner, with a ton of roster issues to address. Due to limited cap space, players such as Jawaan Taylor, Mike Danna, and Drue Tranquill could be released as the team seeks to reduce costs.

Mahomes went the cheaper route for his team, even though he could have forced a new deal. Mahomes is easily the most underpaid player in the entire league. He’s currently the 17th-highest-paid player in the NFL when sorted by APY, or yearly average. Mahomes is the only quarterback in the league. active right now, with more than one Super Bowl win, and he has three.

He also has the second-most playoff wins all time, behind only Tom Brady. And in Brady-esque form, he could only extend that because of what he’s doing with his contract. For so many years, Brady was not the highest-paid player, let alone the highest-paid quarterback, despite being the greatest player of all time. But that was fine with Brady, because it meant his team had more money to get better players around him.

It meant his team would be in a better position at all times. The most Brady ever made in terms of his APY was $25 million, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed him in free agency. Before that, here are his APY’s per contract extension, working backwards from that first deal with the Bucs: $23m, $15m, $20m, $13m, $18m, $10m, $7m. That’s every deal besides his rookie deal, where he made less than $300 thousand because he was drafted in the sixth round by the New England Patriots.

This is something that the great players do. Mahomes, who could have demanded he be paid more when he’s severely underpaid, decided to actually help the team instead.
