NASHVILLE — Brian Daboll and Gus Bradley had their first media availability as the newest offensive and defensive coordinators of the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday. For Daboll, most of the questions the former New York Giants head coach fielded were about his plan for second-year quarterback Cam Ward.

Understandably so.

Daboll did not want to get into too many specifics after his first three weeks on the job, but continued to emphasize his belief in Ward’s abilities. As the coach in New York, Daboll green lit a trade offer from the Giants to Tennessee ahead of last April’s NFL draft to move up to No. 1 overall for the right to draft Ward. Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi ultimately declined the deal and selected Ward with the team’s top draft choice.

The Giants would eventually draft quarterback Jaxson Dart with the 25th overall pick that same year.

Brian Daboll has a deep knowledge of Cam Ward’s abilities

Daboll is now tasked with maximizing his new quarterback’s skill set.

“Utimately Cam (Ward) was a big factor,” Daboll said. “I have a lot of confidence in this young man. I’m sure I’ll get asked about the pre-draft process last year, which was about this time. I had a lot of touch points with him, meetings, 30 visits, going down to Miami, dinner with him and his family. So there was a good relationship built up leading up to the draft. So I look forward to working with him. I know he’s in the building rehabbing. April can’t come soon enough to get going on the offensive installation part of it, but have a lot of confidence in how he played, both at Miami and Washington State.

“He had a whole year under his belt playing in the National Football League and getting accustomed to the speed of the game and the timing, and that’s not an easy thing for quarterbacks. So, it just felt like the right fit, and I look forward to being here.”

As offensive coordinator, Daboll might not be in Tennessee long.

Daboll interviewed for the head coach vacancy with the Titans before the team ultimately decided on former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh. The Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders also considered Daboll to replace Sean McDermott and Pete Carroll, but Daboll opted not to wait for those two clubs to make their decision late in the process and signed on to work with Ward instead. Being a head coach is obviously still something Daboll is interested in.

First, he has to showcase why he deserves another shot at a top job by helping get Tennessee and Ward off the mat.
