Former Packers quarterback receives peculiar opportunity that could unexpectedly extend his NFL career
Taylor Elgersma will be at the NFL Combine.
After the draft a year ago, the Green Bay Packers gave Canadian quarterback Taylor Elgersma a chance. The team brought him in for rookie minicamp, then signed him to the 90-man roster. The quarterback, transitioning from Canadian college football directly to the NFL level, didn’t make the 53-man roster or the practice squad.
However, he has a new chance to compete for a job now. During the NFL Combine this week in Indianapolis, Elgersma was invited to throw during other positions’ drills.
Big opportunity for Elgersma
This is a huge chance for Elgersma, because the physical tools are absolutely there. When the teams watch him throw the football, someone might easily get impressed by his natural talent.
“He’s got a very live arm, and you can see that on tape,” head coach Matt LaFleur said last year after the rookie minicamp. “Obviously, he played at the Senior Bowl and (passing game coordinator Jason) Vrable got to see him there. He was in two of the senior games, we had them in a 30 visit. Another guy that loves football, watching him throw, he’s got a live arm. There’s a lot to like about him.”
Elgersma played college football at Wilfrid Laurier in Canada. Born in London, Ontario, he won the Hec Crighton Trophy in 2024 — it’s the Canadian equivalent to the Heisman Trophy.
A 6-5, 227-pound quarterback, Elgersma is physically gifted, but the transition to the American version of football takes time. If he can’t get an NFL shot soon, there’s another football opportunity waiting for him — he was drafted by the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL, so he could play spring football and get available in time to sign back to the NFL closer to training camp.
His next shot in the NFL will probably not be with the Packers, though, even with Malik Willis set to depart in free agency. Green Bay has already signed Desmond Ridder and Kyle McCord to battle for the backup spot behind Jordan Love, and Elgersma would benefit from a fresh start elsewhere.
