Los Angeles Rams Free Agent Profile: Kam Curl’s 2025 season could be enough to break recent Rams trend
Kamren Curl’s tenure as the Rams’ strong safety might have been enough for him to earn a new contract in Los Angeles.
After the retirement of right tackle Rob Havenstein, the Los Angeles Rams are set to have just 13 free agents in the offseason. While I’m not sure how many of these players the Rams will want to have back, there are some worth monitoring this offseason as LA gears up for one more Super Bowl run with Matthew Stafford.
Ahead of free agency beginning, we will be taking a look at each free agent, breaking down what they did last season and whether or not they should be retained.
Kamren Curl
Position: Safety
Age for 2027 Season: 27
Incoming NFL Year: 6th
Previous AAV: $4.5 million
2025 Snap %: 99.1%
What Kamren Curl did in 2025
Curl was the starting strong safety next to Kamren Kinchens this season, adding some experience to a secondary with plenty of youth. Curl led the team in snaps, starting all 20 games this season and playing over 1,300 snaps. Curl was a strong enforcer in the run game with some tremendous showings against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 3 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 12, but his coverage left much to be desired when playing deep.
However, in the playoffs, the Rams rotated Curl to be more in the box, and he responded well with two strong performances against the Panthers and Bears to help the Rams reach the NFC Championship game.
Overall, the Rams got what they paid for with Curl, who helped reinforce their run defense with how light their personnel was, but there was a trade off in coverage. For just $4.5 million last year, Curl was worth the price tag, even if the Rams didn’t use him in his best role until late in the season.
Kamren Curl’s projection for 2026
Where it gets tricky is the Rams simply do not pay safeties. They haven’t extended a safety since Mark Barron (who was technically a linebacker) under general manager Les Snead. Curl helps shore up their run defense, but he needs to be in a fairly niche role in the box fully with talent shoring up the back end to replace his presence deep.
However, if he were to return as a box safety or in a dimebacker role (to give the Rams some athleticism at linebacker there) and replace Jaylen McCollough, I could fully endorse him returning on a similar deal to what he played the last two seasons. If, however, he was to return as a split-field safety playing in the same role he spent most of the season in, I’d be hesitant to be fully onboard.
Contract prediction: Two years, $14 million max value, $9 million fully guaranteed
