KC Chiefs’ 2026 NFL Draft plans could be impacted by Jets’ trade sending Jermaine Johnson to Titans for T’Vondre Sweat
This player-for-player trade might leave the Kansas City Chiefs a bit uncomfortable.
A trade between AFC East and AFC South teams could now shake up how the top five picks in the 2026 NFL Draft turn out, which could impact the Kansas City Chiefs’ hopes for pick No. 9.
The New York Jets and the Tennessee Titans pulled off a rare player-for-player trade, with defensive end Jermaine Johnson heading south and defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat heading east. New Titans head coach Robert Saleh spoke about Sweat earlier in the week, suggesting he might be asked to do some things in Saleh’s scheme that he wasn’t used to. In the end, they opted to move on from Sweat with the goal of improving their edge-rushing corps, which wasn’t particularly strong the season prior.
Both clubs now have an opportunity to alter their draft strategy with some key needs addressed ahead of free agency.
How the Jets-Titans trade could shake up the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft
The Jets currently hold the No. 2 overall pick, and with Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza expected to go No. 1 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders, they’ve positioned themselves to take the top player at any other position.
Many believe that they could go with Ohio State LB Arvell Reese, who plans to do both off-ball and edge rusher drills at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine. The issue here is that they’ve now created a need for themselves at edge rusher, which opens up the possibility that they could go after Rueben Bain Jr. or David Bailey at No. 2 overall. The Chiefs held formal interviews with both players at the combine, and they sorely need some help in the pass-rushing department.
On the flipside, the Titans have the No. 4 overall pick in the draft. They were perceived as a big threat to Kansas City potentially selecting an edge rusher at No. 9, but with Jermaine Johnson in the fold, they could now shift their focus to the offensive side of the ball. They could go with the best offensive tackle available or the best wide receiver available to help out Cam Ward. They could even turn out to be players for Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love.
Ultimately, this has the potential to shift the entire dynamic of the early goings of the first round. Obviously, free agency still has to play out, and that will also play a role in team needs. It’s something the Chiefs will have to navigate, and it might leave the team in a pickle when it comes to their hopes of selecting players at premium positions at pick No. 9.
The other unspoken part about this trade that should leave the Chiefs concerned
The Chiefs are among the many teams seeking improvement on the interior defensive line with players like Mike Pennel and Derrick Nnadi slated for free agency. T’Vondre Sweat isn’t the only defensive tackle who could be shipped off before free agency or the 2026 NFL Draft. There’s a lot of trade interest right now in defensive tackles because the free-agent class isn’t perceived as particularly strong, and the 2026 NFL Draft class isn’t viewed as particularly deep on the defensive interior either.
No. 9 overall might be too high for the Chiefs to look at interior defensive line prospects, while No. 40 might be too late to get a true impact player in this draft class. This just adds another layer of complexity to the team’s search for improvement opposite Chris Jones. Free agents and draft prospects might be overvalued, which could lead to an aggressive strategy from Brett Veach.
