Lightning and severe weather force Kansas City Chiefs’ training camp practice indoors for the first time in 2026
The weather in St. Joseph, Missouri, has forced the Kansas City Chiefs to move to the indoor practice facility at Missouri Western State University.
Update: The Chiefs are moving back outside and allowing fans back in to practice as of 10:00 a.m. CT.
The Kansas City Chiefs have moved practice indoors for the first time during 2026 NFL training camp.
Day 7 of training camp on Wednesday, Aug. 5, will be held in the indoor practice facility at Missouri Western State. When lightning is detected within 15 miles of the practice fields in St. Joseph, Missouri, the Chiefs move practice indoors for safety purposes.
If it’s early enough, the Chiefs will delay fans from entering practice. Today, fans and players made it out to practice before the team decided to move things indoors. Fox 4 Kansas City’s Harold Kuntz captured the migration indoors.
The team can move practice back outside if the weather clears up at another point in practice, but that doesn’t always happen.

If there is only light rain, Andy Reid will often have players practice in it. Why? Because football is played rain or shine. It’s good experience for what players might actually face in the regular season.
When an indoor practice is triggered, ticketed fans must shelter in their cars or designated indoor areas until the all-clear is given. They are not permitted to watch practice in the indoor facility. That will likely change with the Chiefs’ new practice facility in Kansas.
Media members are allowed inside. However, they’re often restricted in what they can share because they’re a lot closer to the action. KSHB-TV’s McKenzie Nelson got a few quick videos of players in the indoor facility before practice began.
The Chiefs often have a succinct plan of what they’ll work on when they do go into the indoor facility at Missouri Western State University. They don’t have as much space to work with, so they have to be even more organized than they already are.
