Outside linebackers coach Levorn Harbin was one of the casualties of the Tennessee Vols’ defensive coordinator change this offseason.

Harbin wasn’t retained by new Vols defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who was hired in December to replace Tim Banks.

Coach Chop, as Harbin was known in Knoxville, wasn’t out of a job for long. The Missouri Tigers officially hired Harbin in late January.

Levorn Harbin is already paying off for Missouri

Harbin is already paying off for Missouri as he has the Tigers very much in the mix for 2027 five-star EDGE Chris Whitehead.

Whitehead, 6-foot-5/230 pounds from Chesterfield, VA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 3 EDGE in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Virginia. He’s also rated as the No. 22 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class.

The biggest reason Missouri is in the mix for Whitehead is the relationship Harbin built with the five-star recruit while on Tennessee’s coaching staff.

“Whitehead’s visits begin Tuesday at Missouri, and there is a lot of familiarity with the Tigers through new defensive line coach Levorn “Chop” Harbin,” wrote 247Sports’ Brian Dohn. “He was instrumental in getting Whitehead to visit Tennessee several times while with the Vols.”

“I’ve been talking to (Harbin) since I was a freshman,” said Whitehead to 247Sports.

It doesn’t appear that Tennessee is a serious threat to land Whitehead at this point, but Missouri certainly seems to be thanks to Harbin.
