Oklahoma Sooers could soon run into a good problem to have when it comes to their 2027 recruiting class
The Sooners already have two of the best offensive tackles in the entire 2027 recruiting class.
The Oklahoma Sooners boast one of the nation’s strongest 2027 recruiting classes. Even more impressive, they have secured the top offensive tackle duo in Cooper Hackett and Kaeden Penny—both in-state standouts likely to remain committed.
Recent recruiting developments put the Sooners in a challenging spot. While positive, they introduce a dilemma. Rivals reports Oklahoma is making a strong push for 2027 offensive tackle Brian Swanson. Landing more elite prospects is ideal, but the Sooners already have two top tackles. Swanson is currently the No. 17 OT in the country. Hackett is No. 3, and Penny is No. 4.
“They’ve really picked it up lately,” Swanson told Rivals when asked about OU. “The staff at Oklahoma has been consistent, hitting me up often and showing exactly how I fit into their plans. They’re making it clear I’m a priority.”
Sooners would likely have to move someone to guard
If the Sooners did land Swanson, which it feels like there is a very good shot at that happening, then either Swanson or Penny would have to move to the guard position. Hackett is a tackle, and that’s what he will pretty much always be. As for Penny, he’s currently listed at 6’4, 275, where Swanson is listed at 6’5, 315. If it were between the two, Swanson feels like he would get the nod at tackle. But, then again, it’s all about the tools they have, too.
We know the Sooners can develop any position on the offensive line.
“Coach B (offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh) has been consistent and real with me, showing how I fit in their system at Oklahoma. The culture and development with them make it feel like it could be a great fit,” Swanson explained. “I really respect how Coach B and the staff keep it 100 with me and don’t let up. They’ve been intentional and made me feel valued, which puts them in a strong spot.”
This move could also lead to complications. Either Penny or Swanson may have been assured a position they now cannot occupy. Increased competition might fracture the class, with one potentially leaving. If Penny or Swanson agrees to transition to guard, there’s no issue. But high school recruiting in the NIL era is unpredictable.
Currently, Rivals projects Swanson to commit to the Texas Longhorns, so this situation could ultimately prove irrelevant.
