The Chicago Bears got a big blow to the team’s offseason plans on Tuesday when Pro Bowl starting center Drew Dalman announced his retirement, but it doesn’t seem like that void will prevent the Bears from going for a big swing.

The Bears are still in the heart of the Maxx Crosby trade talks and one of the top teams hoping to land the premier pass rusher ahead of free agency.

Bears are still a ‘team to watch’ for Maxx Crosby and best positioned to make a deal

“Multiple sources indicate the Chicago Bears are a team to watch in potentially dealing for Crosby,” CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported on Wednesday. “The Bears aren’t the only team with interest in Crosby — the Dallas Cowboys are lurking, according to sources — but they could be best positioned to do a deal if one can be done. The new league year begins March 11.”

This goes to show that many around the league believe the Bears are still looking to get this deal done despite the shocking news on Tuesday. It’s not going to be cheap by any means and having other teams positioning to land Crosby will just drive the price up even more.

The Cowboys being linked is notable here. Dallas has already created $47 million in cap room by restructuring Dak Prescott and Tyler Smith with more restructures expected. That would give the Cowboys plenty of cap space to bring Crosby in and the team still has a stockpile of draft picks to hand over to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Bears are going to have to sweeten up their offer if they want to land Maxx Crosby

If Chicago wants to win this negotiation battle against the Cowboys and land Crosby, the Bears are going to have to sweeten the deal and one player can help entice the Raiders to take their offer.

“One Bears player plenty around the league are keeping an eye on is wide receiver DJ Moore,” Jones added. “The former first-round pick is coming off his least productive year of his career. The Patriots could be a landing spot for Moore if the Bears do a deal involving the receiver, or he could be part of a hypothetical package that goes to a needy Las Vegas team in a deal for Crosby.”

Adding Moore to the equation could help lower trade package for Chicago and allow the Bears to retain a future first-round pick they would otherwise have to give up for Crosby, maybe even Tremaine Edmunds could be included in that package. It’s also worth noting that Jones mentioned the New England Patriots as a team to watch for Moore.

It’s going to be a very busy next few days for the Bears but it’s clear after this report that Chicago is still willing to make some deals before the new league year starts.
