Steelers wide receiver makes a last-second move ahead of free agency that proves the writing is on the wall in Pittsburgh
Calvin Austin III seems to be on his way out of Pittsburgh.
The Pittsburgh Steelers are approaching the busiest week on the NFL calendar. Armed with $40 million in effective cap space and 27 pending free agents, there will be a lot of coming and going as it pertains to the future of players in Pittsburgh.
No name is bigger than Aaron Rodgers, of course, who just this week said he’s not ready to decide his future. But there are other potential departures to keep an eye on. The big one is running back Kenny Gainwell, who looks poised to test the market, but the other offensive weapon that could be on a new team by the end of next week is Calvin Austin III. His latest move proves that he may be doing just that.
Calvin Austin III changes representation ahead of NFL free agency
Rosenhaus Sports announced on Wednesday that their newest client is Steelers WR Calvin Austin III. Now, that could be that Austin is just looking to find his best representation, but what it likely means is that Austin will be seeking the most he can on the open market.
The Rosenhaus crew is known to be some of the best agents in the league, led by who many believe to be the football patriarch, Drew Rosenhaus. On top of being among the best in the business, they are known for driving hard bargains and pushing for their clients.
For Calvin Austin III, that’s obviously great news. For the Steelers, who have a four-year sample size of what Austin is, they will probably like him back at a discount, if at all. He’s a fine player, but he’s a WR No. 3 or No. 4 in a solid room. The Steelers need to rebuild that unit from the ground up.
The only player locked into 2026 should be DK Metcalf, and maybe Roman Wilson, because he is still on his rookie deal and could be taking a year three step in a new system under Mike McCarthy. The bottom line is, Austin III didn’t sign with a new agency to take a hometown discount, and that could mean he’s on his way out of Pittsburgh.
